The ‘Mystery’ of Our Lady of Częstochowa

The beautiful Icon at St Cuthbert’s, Lytham Rd has recently been restored to its former glory, but its origins still remain a mystery to all. The icon has accompanied the Polish community in Blackpool for many years and plays an important part in their religious life. In a similar way very little is known about the origins of the original Icon in Jasna Gora. There are legends that surround its beginnings and tradition tells us it was painted by St Luke the Evangelist on a table top from the House of the Holy Family in Nazareth. Regardless of these claims what we do know for sure is that wherever the Icon travelled it was venerated and surrounded by miraculous events including the defeat of the Turkish army at Vienna in 1683 which saved Christianity in Europe. The miracles are too many to name and the intercessions granted to those who pray to Mary of Jasna Gora, too many to count.

The Icon at St Cuthbert’s has now been returned to its rightful place, at the heart of the Catholic community in the parish. If you are passing, or attending Mass you are warmly invited to spend some time in front of the Icon to pray, to ponder or merely to admire the mystery and beauty of Our Lady of Jasna Gora.

Christmas Fair

What a Tour de Force! So many people from all over the parish, together with our Polish friends and the uniformed groups, the staff and children at SJV, all under the watchful direction of Carole and her crew. Thanks to all of you. A staggering £2000+ was raised!
